HUNTINGTON BEACH, California —
After losing some key players on the first day of free agency, the Minnesota Vikings made a big splash on Thursday when they signed former Ravens DT Michael Pierce. The run stopping nose tackle did a great job for the Ravens last season, starting 14 games en route to the AFC Championship game. He is a 27 year old mountain of a man listed at 6’0″ 340 lbs. He is also one of the strongest players in the NFL which was evidenced by a viral video that showed him squatting over 700 lbs last year.
Although he doesn’t get many sacks (only 3.5 sacks in 3 seasons), “The Juggernaut” has been one of the highest graded defensive tackles against the run since he entered the league. Pro Football Focus gave him an elite overall grade of 91.0 in 2018.
His new 3 year $27 Million dollar contract is backloaded with a $5.1 Million dollar cap hit in 2020 to give the Vikings added flexibility this offseason as they attempt to re-sign Pro Bowl RB Dalvin Cook. Although It hurt to see Linval Joseph get cut on Wednesday, the Vikings were able to upgrade the nose tackle position, get younger in the process, and save over $5 million dollars in cap space.
$6M signing bonus, $3M base salary, fully guaranteed, $100K workout bonus ($5.1M cap hit)
$7.9M base salary (guaranteed 3rd day of league year), $100k workout bonus, $500K roster bonus
